Wireless FAQ For Older Apple PowerBook Computers

Please bookmark my new site for Wireless FAQ For Older Apple PowerBook Computers. This site has become so popular, that I am reaching the maximum bandwidth allowed by my free service at Earthlink. This location will stay active and updated, as long as Earthlink does not cut me off for excessive bandwidth.

As always, this site and the new site will remain free. All I ask is if you have any information to contribute, please do so.

Now on with the FAQ.

==========================

The following resources will help you to install and maintain 802.11b wireless PCMCIA Cards on older Apple PowerBook computers.

This covers PowerBooks which have PC Card slots, from the PowerBook 190 to the G3 and G4 Powerbooks.

Generally, you should be running OS 7.5.5 through OS 9.2.2 with Open Transport v1.1 or greater. A clean install of the OS is recommended (but not always necessary) before attempting to add wireless to any PowerBook.

While there is some limited information specific to USB/PCI/Ethernet Adaptors, OS X, and the Apple AirPort card in this document, it's purpose is to support users of the Classic OS with PC Cards.

This FAQ is now including limited information on how to add wireless to the following computers: Mac Mini, iMac (Bodni Blue 233mhz), iMac (Five Flavors 266 & 333mhz), Desktop/Tower PowerMac and PowerMac G3 not equiped with AirPort Slot. See Section 5.0.1 below for substitutes for a wireless card.

Please note, in most cases wireless cards based on the 802.11a, 802.11g, 802.11n or combo 802.11a/b/g/n standard are not supported on these older Macintosh computers. Cardbuss cards are not generally usable on older PowerBooks.

Revised 17 April, 2007. This information is not complete and subject to change. This is a work in progress.

Section 1.0: Start Here

First, go to Derek Miller's great site to see how to install wireless on older PowerBook computer.

If you have a problem that is unusual, or involves OS X, check out the XLR8yourmac.com Networking FAQ.

I Highly recommend you review this site often. Once you have scanned the articles there, return to this site and see if we can help you.

Section 2.0: Wireless Card Types, What Type Do You Need?

Wireless Cards come in four types:

This FAQ deals with the first two primarily, but provides some information about the AirPort Cards, and substitute wireless adaptors for the iBook, Mac mini and other Macintosh computers not easly put on wireless networks.

...........................

PowerBooks which have 16 - Bit PCMCIA Slots:

190/190cs, 500, 520/520cs, 540/540cs, 1400, 2400, 3400, 5300, Kanga.

PowerBooks which have 32 - Bit CardBuss slots:

Wallstreet, Wallstreet II (PDQ), Lombard, and above.

All PowerBooks from the Pismo on, and all iBook's have a built in AirPort, or AirPort Extreme slot. They may or may not have a PC Card Slot.

PowerBooks which are 32 - Bit CardBuss compliant, may use a 16- Bit PCMCIA Wireless Card without problem.

...........................

PowerBooks which have a AirPort Slot, but do not have a card installed, may use a Mac compatible Wireless PC Card in the PC Card Slot.

PowerBooks which have a AirPort Card installed, may not be able to use a Wireless PC Card, without first removing the AirPort Card.

...........................

PowerBooks which have a CardBuss slot, and can run OS X 10.2.6 or later, and AirPort software v3.1 or later, may use a 802.11g wireless card in leu of a internal AirPort or AirPort Extreme card. AirPort software will control a card using the Broadcom chip set.

iBooks do not have a Card slot and cannot use a PCMCIA or Cardbuss card. The only solution is a Apple AirPort card, or a USB/Ethernet wireless interface. See Section 4.8 and Section 4.10 below for substitutes for a iBook wireless card.

...........................

Mac mini does not have a Card slot and cannot use a PCMCIA or Cardbuss card. The Mac mini offers AirPort Extreme Wireless as a Build To Order Option only . This options is not user-installable, but can be added later by an Authorized Service Provider. See Section 5.0.1 below for substitutes for a Mac mini wireless card.

Alvarion BreezeNET PC-DS.11b. This card is a OEM of the Agere/Lucent WaveLan Gold Card. However its Non Volatile Ram is flashed so the ORiNOCO software does not recognize the card. It works great with the Macsense AeroCard Driver, however it receives a Not Recommended rating because of the expense of purchasing the card and then purchasing the software to make it work. If you have one of these cards, and it cost you little or nothing, then by all means use it. Works great under OS 8.6 - 9.2.2. See Section 4.2 below for links to the Alvarion web site.

Section 4.1: Wireless Software: For the Lucent WaveLan/ORiNOCO/Agere/Proxim/Terabeam 16-Bit Gold or Silver PC Card, Proxim Classic Gold Card, and many (not all) OEM/Private brand versions of this card.

Important Note: Terabeam Wireless purchased the assets of Proxim in August of 2005. As the two companies merge their web sites, some of these links may no longer work. Please check the Terabeam Support Page. for products that you cannot find on the Proxim web site.

The minimum recommended software and firmware for use on a PowerBook is as follows:

Lucent WaveLan Software v6.00.4
Lucent WaveLan Station Firmware v6.0.4

Station Firmware is displayed in the WaveLan /ORiNOCO control panel.

This firmware added WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) functionality. WiFi requires a firmware level 6.04, or greater, in the PC cards. WiFi functionality ensures interoperability with other 802.11b products. Supports 64 & 128 WEP.

All older versions of software listed here are for reference only. Firmware can be upgraded, but I have not flashed any cards. You may be able to flash a OEM version of a card, and upgrade it, but do so at your own risk. Links below for latest firmware.

Upgrade a ORiNOCO/Lucent WaveLan Silver to Gold (64bit WEP to 128bit WEP) with a Macintosh laptop. This site shows how to do this under OS9, and you should be able to do this under OS X. See the Apple Tech Documents below.

Before you install ORiNOCO Software on a PowerBook 190, 1400 or 5300, read the Known Issues with version 7.2 Macintosh Client Software.

Note: ORiNOCO/WaveLan Software can be used to control an Apple AirPort card under OS 8.6 to 9.2.2. If you are having problems with the AirPort Card, or you need more flexibility, you may want to try this software. For additional information see the Agere Systems TB-014 document in the Service/Support section below.

Proxim's Support web site may require registration before use. If you are having trouble with any of the links, Go Here to register. Then search for the following: ORiNOCO Classic Gold (Answer ID 1082).

The Proxim Support Web Site also has information on the Skyline Wireless Cards and Farallon Ethernet Adaptors (see Section 4.12). Search by Keyword Farallon, Netline, or Ethermac. Links to some of the Farallon Ethernet software are at the bottom of Section 4.12

Section 4.2

Wireless Software: For the Alvarion BreezeNET PC-DS.11b 16 - Bit PC Card

Notes: The FCC ID Number on this card indicates it's a Lucent/Agere Gold card. However, the Macintosh version of the WaveLan/ORiNOCO software does not see this card. I suspect that it's Firmware is customized to Alvarion specification. Possibly for use in a Alvarion Access Point.

The Alvarion web site does not list Macintosh compatibility, or have Macintosh drivers, however it works well with the third party driver from Macsense.

It may be possible to flash the card with the ORiNOCO firmware, but I have not tried this.

If you are looking to purchase a card, I would not recommend this one. Their are better options available.

Replacement AirPort Wireless Card 802.11b for iBook.

The original AirPort Card was made by Agere Systems. This link will let you download a PDF about this card. It may be possible to purchase this card and use the AirPort Software to update the card. OS X Required.

Please note that it has been reported that the original AirPort Card is available as a Service Part. Available from your local Apple dealer or from this company.

...........................

"The Sony Vaio 802.11b card is apparently a replacement for the original Apple AirPort card, (not the extreme card). Works with OS 9.1.1 and OS X. Works "as is" after removing the antenna plate from the Vaio card, the Mac antenna just plugs in the same as the AirPort card."

"One user was having trouble with his original AirPort card and decided to open it up and see if there was anything loose inside. Turns out that after he cracked the case, the thing's got "Sony Corporation" written all over it. So I think that explains why this brand of VAIO card does the trick."

More info on the Sony Vaio card.

Notes: I called SonyStyle ( in US 800-865-7669) and was told the card part number has been superseded by the following PCWA-C300S, a 802.11b/g PC Card. I cannot confirm the revised part number would work as a replacement for the AirPort card.

...........................

As an alternative to the original AirPort Card, you may want to look at the D-Link USB Wireless Adaptor mentioned in section 4.8 above (Supports OS X only), or the MacWireless USB adaptor (Supports OS 9.04 to OS X). Both companies offer a compact adaptor that may fit your needs.

Section 5.0.1: Replacement AirPort Extreme Wireless Card 802.11g for Mac mini.

Substitute wireless adaptors for early iMac and other Mac desktops not not equiped with an AirPort Slot.

The Mac mini offers AirPort Extreme Wireless card as an Build To Order Option only This options is not user-installable, but can be added later by an Authorized Service Provider. ( See this MacWorld Mac mini FAQ)

As an alternative, your Mac mini can use a EtherNet Wireless Bridge. The Bridge has the advantage of requiring no software, and is available in both a 802.11b and g speeds, and with WEP or WPA encription. Take a look at products from

Belkin 802.11g EtherNet to Wireless Bridge.

Buffalo 802.11g EtherNet to Wireless Bridge.

D-Link 802.11b EtherNet to Wireless Bridge.

D-Link 802.11g EtherNet to Wireless Bridge.

MacWireless 802.11g EtherNet to Wireless Bridge

Macsense WUA-800 AeroPad 802.11g/b Ethernet Adaptor.

Other manufactures offer similar products. When looking for any EtherNet to Wireless Bridge, remember four things: All firmware updates must be done on a Windows PC. You configure the bridge with a Web Browser. Does the bridge pass AppleTalk packets? And what encription standard do you want to use? Do you want WEP or WPA? Not all bridges support WPA.

In addition to the Mac mini, the following will work with a Ethernet to Wireless Bridge: iMac (Bondi Blue 233mhz), iMac (Five Flavors 266, 333mhz) PowerPC Desktop, PowerPC Towers, PowerPC G3 and Mac Clones.

...........................

Early iMac's & PowerPC G3's with built in USB, can also use a USB Wireless adaptor, such as:

Belkin Wireless USB Adaptor.

D-Link USB Wireless Adaptor

MacWireless USB Adaptor.

Macsense WUA-400 AeroPad 802.11b USB Adaptor.

Macsense WUA-700 AeroPad 802.11b USB Adaptor.

...........................

If you have a PCI Mac that is running OS-X, then the Buffalo 802.11g PCI Card for OS-X. or a MacWireless 802.11g PCI Card for OS-X. may work for you.

They are compatable with AirPort v3.1 and higher, with OS-X 10.2.6 and higher.

For OS 9, MacWireless 802.11b PCI Card for OS-9. might be approiate.

Section 6: Troubleshooting, My Own Personal Experiences.

Questions Answers
1) The software won't work on my PowerBook?

Affected Models: PowerBook 190, 1400 & 5300

If you have a PowerBook that uses Card and Socket Services 2, (the 190, 1400 & 5300) then you can only support one alternate Ethernet network at a time. Wireless is treated as a alternate Ethernet network.

Example: The PB 1400 supports only LocalTalk, IR-Talk, and only one Ethernet at a time. If you install software for a PCMCIA Ethernet card, then remove the software and install wireless software, it won't work on wireless.

You can remove the wireless software and reinstall the Ethernet software and your PCMCIA Ethernet card will work again.

With Card & Socket Services (CSS2), The installers write data to the System File, and the only way to get it to change is to do a clean install or the OS. A Update of the OS won't work.

The AppleTalk Control Panel in my PowerBook 1400 has the following selections, Remote Only, Infrared (IR Talk), Modem/Printer Port and Alternate Ethernet. If you have installed a version of AOL dial up software, you will also have a listing for AOL Link Enhanced. This AOL software does not affect your ability to add wireless.

2) I need to have wireless and wired Ethernet on my PowerBook. Is their a way around this problem?

Affected Models: PowerBook 190, 1400 & 5300

This is not a problem for PowerBooks that support Card & Socket Services v3 or above. Those computers will support both a wireless and wired Ethernet networks at the same time.

For PowerBook 190, 1400, & 5300 users, the work around for both wireless and wired Ethernet is to partition your hard drive into 2 volumes and install System Software on each volume. One partition supports wired Ethernet, the other the wireless software. Switch back and forth as you need using the Startup Disk Control Panel. Or you may be able to keep an unmodified copy of the System File, then use it to replace the modified System File when needed. .

Or use a Compact Flash card as a start up disk with the wireless software installed and keep your hard disk set up with the Ethernet wired software.

If you don't need or don't want wired Ethernet capability, then you do not have to partition your drive, just make sure to do a clean install of the OS before installing wireless software.

The MacWireless FAQ discusses how to use ResEdit to manually install their wireless driver into the PowerBook 190,1400 & 5300. This information should be valid for use with the Farallon/Proxim Skyline drivers v3.1. This FAQ May provide you with guidance in order to do a manual install of other brands of drivers. Proceed At Your Own Risk.

3) The wireless PC Card I have supports both the ORiNOCO drivers and the AirPort software. Which software should I use?

Affected Models: PowerBook Kanga, Wallstreet, PDQ (Wallstreet II), Lombard, Pismo, or any G4 running OS 8.6 to 9.2.2.

That depends. Do you only connect to AirPort Base Stations? If so, the AirPort software is a natural choice. Do you want to set up a PowerBook as a Wireless Base Station? The AirPort software lets you do that. (Note: A Software Base Station is only supported with AirPort Software under OS 8.6 - 9.2.2. OSX users and non AirPort Compatible PC Cards, require additional software to set up a Software Base Station.)

Do you connect to other types of access points? The ORiNOCO software may give you more flexibility. You can use the ORiNOCO software to set up a Wireless Base Station, with the addition of IP Net Router software.

4) I can connect to a AirPort Base Station with WEP turned OFF, but not when WEP is turned ON.

OR

I can connect to a AirPort Base Station with WEP set to 40/64 Bit encryption but not 128 Bit.

OR

When using the ORiNOCO software, I cannot connect to a AirPort Base Station using WEP.

OR

When using the Farallon/Proxim Skyline software, I cannot connect to a AirPort Base Station using WEP.

OR

When using AirPort Software, I can connect to a third party base station with WEP Turned OFF, but not when WEP is turned ON.

Affected Models: All.

These problem are caused by an incompatibility in the software that converts a ASCII password to HEX password. It usually occurs when using equipment from different manufacturers. It can occur when mixing equipement that is designed for 802.11b, with routers or wireless cards that are 802.11g compatable.

Under OS 8.6 to 9.2.2, Apple AirPort software supports passwords in ASCII text, but can be forced to us a HEX password with the addition of special characters to the password. Under OS X, AirPort software now supports both ASCII and HEX passwords without requiring these special characters. Several other wireless manufactures support passwords in HEX only or both HEX and ASCII.

Farallon/Proxim Skyline, Cisco, ORiNOCO and MacWireless are just a few products that support both, and may need special characters like a $, 0x (thats zero x with no space) or " in front or behind the password. The special characters will be put into the WEP encryption key in the laptop, and possibility the base station or router you are using.

Here are some specific expamples for setting up your PowerBook:

To connect to an Apple AirPort Base Station with the ORiNOCO Software, using the Network Equivalent Password or a HEX password that you put into the Base Station, use a zero x in front of the password. No spaces between the zero x and password.

To connect to an Apple AirPort Base Station (Graphite Or Snow) with the Farallon/Proxim Skyline software, use the Apple AirPort 40/64 Bit ASCII password, place it into the box marked for Apple Compatable. The Farallon/Proxim Skyline cards only support 40/64 Bit WEP.

To connect to an Apple AirPort Base Station (any model which supports 802.11G) with the Farallon/Proxim Skyline software, use the Apple Network Equlivevent password, and place it into the box for WEP Key #1. Leave all other WEP Key Boxes blank. The Farallon/Proxim Skyline cards only support 40/64 Bit WEP.

To connect to an Apple AirPort Base Station with the AirPort Software, using Network Equivalent Password or a HEX password that you put into the Base Station, use a $ (Dollar sign) in front of the password. No spaces between the $ and password.(This requirement has been eliminated in OS-X versions of AirPort Software).

To connect to a third party base station with AirPort Software, using a HEX Password, put a $ in front of the password. No spaces between $ and password. (This requirement has been eliminated in OS-X versions of AirPort Software).

Whenever possable if using mixed equipement use a HEX Password on all. This will be much easer in the long run.

To configure a Apple Graphite or Snow Base Station to use a HEX Password, and if the AirPort Admin Utility is not compatable with your System Software, use the JAVA configuration tools for your base station.

To generate a HEX password from a pass phrase, use WEP Key Maker. This will let you standardize on a HEX password that works with all equipement.

Please review the Apple Technical documents linked above about WEP encryption. The Proxim/Skyline and the Cisco manual also discuss this problem. The Mac Networking Archive has a tutorial on setting up WEP Encryption with a non-Apple base station.

If using a access point that supports plain text (ASCII) passwords for 128 Bit WEP encryption, the password should be 13 characters long. For 40/64 Bit WEP encryption, the password should be 5 characters long. See this link for why you should do this..

If using a access point that supports HEX passwords for 128 Bit WEP encryption, the password should be 26 characters long. For 40/64 Bit WEP encryption, the password should be 10 characters long.

Some of the wireless software available for the Classic OS, does not support 128 Bit Encryption. Even when paired up with cards that are known to support 128 Bit, if the software does not support it, you will be limited to 40/60 Bit, or no encription.

This software was developed and released prior to Apple AirPort being upgrading to 128 Bit Encryption. The vendors of this software chose not to continue supporting it for the Classic OS, as about this time Apple migrated to OS-X.

If you are unable to use 128 Bit Encryption, then perhaps you should use MAC Addressing in addition to the 40/64 WEP Encryption. MAC Addressing will prevent the base stations from talking to any wireless card it does not have in its MAC Address Table.

5) I am attempting to install the ORiNOCO v7.2 software. However only the license agreement installs on my PowerBook.

OR

However when the install is complete, their is no information in the install report other than a date and time, or the report is blank.

OR

When the installer stops, I have to click the cancel button. The installer does not prompt me for a restart.

Affected Models: All.

I experienced these problems on a PowerBook 1400 and a PDQ (Wallstreet II). Listed below is the only reference I have ever found about this problem. From the Avaya Wireless site:

"Known Issues with the version 7.2 Macintosh Client Software":

1. On random systems, the installation will not go past the License Agreement screen. If this occurs, manually place the files and reboot. Once the computer comes back up, the drivers will be properly installed.

2. On random systems, the wireless card will not recover from sleep mode. If this occurs, reboot the computer to restart the wireless card. It has been reported that by creating a different location profile that does not use the wireless card and switching to this profile prior to sleep mode prevents the sleep mode recovery problem for the wireless card."

I did a manual install on the PDQ, and all went well.

However on a PowerBook 1400, or on any other PowerBook that supports Card and Socket Services v2, you cannot manually install the software. The installer writes code to the System File. In my case, I had a PowerBook1400 with a Sonnet G3/466 Accelerator.

Solution: Follow suggestions in Answers 1 & 2 above. If the software still wont install on the PowerBook, and you have preformed a clean install of the OS, follow these suggerstions.

Start up your PowerBook from a different disk and run the installer from that different disk. Use the Drive button in the installer to select the target disk you want.

Start up with Apple Extensions turned on only.

Start up with the Apple Base Extension turned on only.

Try installing your OS on a compact flash card, and then take that card to a different PoweBook and see if you can get the ORiNOCO software to install. (I did not have any luck with this one).

Try installing the ORiNOCO software onto OS 8.6. (I've had better luck with the PowerBook 1400's on OS 8.6 than 9.0 or 9.1. Both on compact flash cards and hard disk).

If that still wont work, remove any accelerator and software.

Still wont install, try a Proxim Skyline card (model 473a with v3.1 of software). I've had several PowerBook 1400's that the ORiNOCO software refuses to install on. The Skyline software would ALWAYS install without problem. Preform a clean install of the OS before trying this card.

6) I am attempting to install the ORiNOCO v7.2 software. However it seems to lock up before the process is complete.

Affected Models: All.

I experienced this problem also on a PowerBook 1400 with a Sonnet G3/466. After force quitting the installer, the PowerBook locked up. I rebooted and the software worked, but the control strip was not functional, and the installation report was a blank page. I restarted with Extensions off, but the installer would not run. Then I started up from another startup disk, ran the installer and targeted the disk I wanted to install too. This time the installer completed the installation. I got a installation report, and the control strip worked.

Please note, this problem occurred after a Clean Install of OS 8.6. The installer did not seem to be effected by the software for the Sonnet card I have, as that software was on both start up disk.

7) I want to run the AirPort Admin Utility, but every time I try to run it, I get the following message:
The Application "AirPort Admin Utility" could not be opened because of "KeychainLib" could not be found.

Affected Models: All.

I experienced this problem also on a PowerBook 1400 with a Sonnet G3/466 with OS 8.6.

Use AirPort Admin Utility 1.3.1, or upgrade to OS 9.1 and use AirPort admin Utility 2.0.2.

If the AirPort Admin Utility is not compatable with your System Software, use the JAVA configuration tools for your base station.

8) I have a Apple Base Station, and a older PowerBook that wont run the AirPort Software. How can I configure the Base Station?

Affected Models: All.

If you have a Graphite or Snow Base Station, you can use the AirPort Administration Utility, or you can use the Base Station Configurator, a JAVA application from Drexel University which will run on a Macintosh with OS 8.1 or greater. You must install Mac OS Runtime for JAVA 2.2.5 or higher & and the Swing Libraries (in the System Folder/Extensions/MRJ Libraries/MRJClasses). Restart after installing the MRJ and Swing Libraries, and you should be able to configure your Base Station. This software will also let you upload Apple Firmware for both the Graphite & Snow Base Station.

Their are two versions of this software, be sure to choose the correct one for your Base Station.

9) I have a Apple Base Station, and a older PowerBook that will run the AirPort Software.

However I am using a PC Card that is not compatible with the AirPort Software, but works with the vendors software.

I have been able to use the AirPort Admin Utility, but I am unable to configure WEP with it. The WEP Selection is grayed out.

Affected Models: All.

If you have a Graphite Base Station, try v1.3.1 of the AirPort Admin Utility. Sometime, this version will let you access all of the settings in the Base Station.

The Snow Base Station requires AirPort Admin Utility v2.0.2 or above. It cannot be configured with v1.3.1.

If that does not work, use the JAVA Configuration Utilities mentioned above. It will let you configure the WEP using a HEX password. It does not support ASCII passwords.

When using the JAVA Configurator, be sure to deselect the check box to "Allow Unencrypted Data" in the Wireless LAN Settings pane. With this option checked you will have users with encryption ON, or OFF, connected to the Base Station. They wont know the difference. This feature is helpful if you use a encrypted network, but want to open it up for short times. After making changes in the configuration be sure to check "Update Base Station" button. Changes don't take effect until you do so.

10) I want to run the AirPort Admin Utility, but every time I try to run it, I get the following message:
"The required AirPort software was not found on this computer. Certain base station configuration options will not be available".
When I click the continue button, the Utility cannot find a Base Station, even though I am able to see the wireless network.

Affected Models: All.

Make sure your Base Station is not using WEP. If it is, you could have the password incorrect in the software on your PowerBook. With the ORiNOCO v7.2 software I use, I had to put 0x (zerox) in the front of the password in order for the ORiNOCO software to talk to the Base Station.

I had previously used the JAVA Base Station Configurator, (on a PB1400 with Skyline Software & OS 8.6), and set the base station to a HEX password. The ORiNOCO software showed a good Signal Strength, but did not tell me I had the password incorrect. Once the password was corrected, it took about 1 minute before the ORiNOCO software showed the connected icon in the Control Strip. I then checked the TCP/IP Control Panel, and it showed a IP address assigned by the Base Station (10.0.1.x}. Until you get a IP Address, you are not connected to the Base Station, even though your wireless software shows you connected.

After this, I used the AirPort Admin Utility v2.0.4 and was able to log into the Base Station. I was not able to turn off the WEP encryption, but was able to see that it was on.

Some features of the AirPort Base Stations, cannot be controlled unless you are using a AirPort Card, a Compatible third party card (Lucent, YDI, ect), and AirPort Software.

With the connection still up, I again logged into the Base Station this time with the AirPort Admin Utility v1.3.1. This version let me access the WEP Encryption selection and change those settings.

Always have the JAVA Configuration tools set up and working on your PowerBook as a backup to the Apple Utilities.

11) When using the JAVA AirPort BaseStation Configurator, how do I set the modem strings for the Graphite Base Station?

Affected Models: All.

The modem strings are set in the Network Connection Tab.

For a v32 connection, use: &FX4+MS=11&WZ

For a v90 connection, use: &FX4S0=0&WZ

The JAVA AirPort BaseStation Configurator will not set the modem strings for the Snow Base Station. You will need AirPort software v2.0.2 or higher.

12) When using the JAVA AirPort BaseStation Configurator, how do I turn on WEP Encryption?

Affected Models: All.

The WEP encryption is set in the Wireless LAN Settings Tab.

Place a check in the Use Encryption box. Select the Radio Button for the Encryption Key you want to use. In most cases this will be Key 1. Enter the password in the following format: For 128 Bit WEP encryption, the password should be 26 characters long. For 40/64 Bit WEP encryption, the password should be 10 characters long. Enter the password in HEX format.

If you need a ASCII Character to Hexadecimal Key Conversion Table, one is available in the Skyline Tech Notes.

13) No matter what I try, I can not configure my AirPort Base Station with my older PowerBook.

Affected Models: All.

Use the instructions contained in this link to configure your Base Station with a Ethernet Crossover Cable. You may have to do a hard reset of the Base Station if it is locked up.
14) Can I use the same wireless PCMCIA card under the Classic OS as well as OS-X?

OR

Can I use the same wireless PCMCIA card when I travel to other countries?

Affected Models: All.

Yes and No. The 802.11g cards are not compatible with the Classic OS.

However drivers for OS-X are available for most every brand 802.11b card listed on this FAQ.

sorceforge.net Has OS-X drivers for the Prism II based cards (Lucent WaveLan, ORiNOCO & OEM).

Asante, Cisco, MacWireless, Macsense, and IOXperts, have drivers for both the Classic OS and OS-X. Check with them to see if their Software Licenses lets you use the same on two different OS.

As for using your PCMCIA card when you travel, for 802.11b & 802.11g, cards Channel 10 and 11 are universal to all countries, and channels 1 through 9 are common to the USA, Canada, EU, and Japan.

Cards which are specific to the EU and Japan have additional chanels which are not allowed to be used in the US & Canada.

See this link for a list of all available channels.
