Kanjitalk

Does anyone have a link to a working copy of this fella?
With a wee a bit of tweaking and combining one can (apparently) get System 6 working on PB's 140 & 170. This would be a godsend as the PB 100's seem a tad fragile with age.

Re: Kanjitalk

Up until quite recently the only Powerbook I was aware of that could run Mac OS 6 was the PB 100. It turns out that this is not quite the case - the Japanese KanjiTalk version of system 6 (6.0.7.1 to be specific) is designed to install not only on the Powerbook 100, but also on the Powerbook 140 and 170!

Well, what use is that if you can't read Japanese? The answer is simple, just use ResEdit to turn the dialogues and menus back into English by copying the corresponding resources from US system 6.0.7. Fortunately there are some very clear instructions on how to do this here:

http://school.anhb.uwa.edu.au/personalpages/kwessen/web/misc/powerbooksys6.html

Even more fortunate, KanjiTalk system 6.0.7.1 can be found here:

http://www1.linkclub.or.jp/~kenfuji/KANJI%20Talking/

One needs to make the modification to the Finder, Multifinder and System. For most control panels simply replace the Japanese version with the US versions of these from system 6.0.7, for example. I also replaced the Portable control panel with the version in system 6.0.8L. However, I found it necessary to keep the Kanji version of Backgrounder.

By and large the pieced-together system 6 seems to work very well, and so far I haven't found any bugs, other than on the sleep dialogue, where sleep and cancel are the wrong way around. This can also be easily fixed with ResEdit. There are a few residual dialogues that remain in Japanese, probably from resources that are unique to the Japanese version.

I've been running this system on my Powerbook 170 off a Ram disk created using Ramdisk+ 3.4.2a, and it is really fast and nice to use. There is plenty of space left over to fit Word 5.1a on the Ram disk and run a second application as well.

Cheers,

Philip

Re: Kanjitalk

Many, many thanks, Philip. Finding a working d/l link for this has been a quest for quite a few folks, I gather. Now that you have kindly provided one, I'll have to go back and install system 6 in one of my old 140 'books. I'm sure that sys 6 simply flies on those machines!

That's just excellent... I knew the page of instructions but not the download site. Which disks are which on the 6.0.7.1HD directory (i.e. which one has the files to modify)?

Re: Kanjitalk

Now, I'm a little further along the path to redemption.

I've sorted out the System Startup & System Additions disks from the Kanji 6.0.7.1 bundle.

I'e copied them to floppies.

I've opened up the System file with ResEdit on both the Kanji disk and a copy of 6.0.8 (US) and copied the relevant files from one to the other (Finder/Multifinder/System).

When it;s time to save the changes I get a 'not enough space error (-34).

Phil, a tad more help would be appreciated.

Re: Kanjitalk

I'd try that operation on a hard disk first, and then write the result back to floppy. It may be that the deletion operation doesn't get reflected in the filesize calculation until all is done. I recall having similar problems years ago with other ResEdit hacks.

Re: Kanjitalk

Hi Andy,

I modified the system/finder/multifinder as per the instructions, but used resources from US system 6.0.7 instead because I assumed that this would be more similar to KanjiTalk 6.0.7.1 than system 6.0.8.

There were a few resources that I couldn't update because they weren't available in the US version of 6.0.7, but I didn't get the "not enough space" error that you did.

If you are stuck I can BinHex the system folder I created and email it to you.

Cheers,

Phil

A copy would be nice... chooterbloom@gmail.com.

The hard disk transfer solved some of the problems that cropped up with space errors but not all. Plus, 6.0.7 is difficult to get hold of now the link on Gamba's site is no longer valid.

It's fun furtling about with ResEdit again I'd forgotten how much I liked it... and it's not OSX which continues to both fascinate and abhor me at the same time. Mac ambivalence? Now there's a new one... not.

Re: Kanjitalk

Thanks Tom for the link.
Phil, you're a hero.

One small extra, do I just use the System Additions disk as per normal? The Kanji or the US? Any modifications needed?
