Farallon Enhances EtherWave with ADB Power for Macintosh PowerBook Computers ALAMEDA, Calif., June 26, 1995--Farallon Computing, Inc., a leading provider of innovative networking software and hardware, today announced that it has enhanced its EtherWave Mac/PowerBook Adapter by adding support for Apple Desktop Bus (ADB) power to allow increased portability for mobile users. This enhancement eliminates the need for a separate power supply. ADB is the same port on the PowerBook and Macintosh computers that is used for keyboard and mouse connections. Farallon's new product plugs into that port to draw power and incorporates an ADB ' pass through" connection on the ADB power cable so that users will not lose the capability of using a keyboard or mouse when connecting to a 10Base-T Ethernet network. From the ADB port, the short, coiled cable will plug into the EtherWave Mac/PowerBook Adapter's serial port connector. This new product replaces Farallon's previous EtherWave PowerBook Adapter, which had been shipping since June, 1994. For those users with machines that do not have an ADB port, Farallon will offer the power supply separately. "We are always looking for ways to simplify the networking experience of our customers," said Ken Haase, EtherWave product manager at Farallon. "With mobile users, the need is even more critical, and this product offers the increased portability and convenience that they require." One way convenience and ease-of-use are realized in the EtherWave Mac/PowerBook Adapter is by virtue of its connection. Because it plugs into Apple's built-in networking port (the serial port), no dock is required and it is easier to use and more reliable than a SCSI Ethernet solution. The second way convenience and ease-of-use are achieved is via Farallon's patented daisy-chainable 10Base-T EtherWave technology that allows PowerBook computer users to connect to an existing 10Base-T network without requiring a free port on the hub, pulling more wire or disconnecting an existing networked computer. The EtherWave Mac/PowerBook Adapter offers Apple EtherTalk driver compatibility and works with all popular network software such as NetWare, AppleShare, MacTCP, and MacSNMP. The adapter provides a cost-effective means for connecting portable users to a corporate network, offering full access to information and networked tools such as file and print servers. The EtherWave Mac/PowerBook Adapter is also a useful solution for mobile workgroups who want the performance of a full 10Mbps Ethernet connection, without requiring a hub. For example, auditor teams can easily set up "conference room" networks to share and exchange information with everyone in the room. The EtherWave Mac/PowerBook Adapter provides mobile users with flexibility to create networks of any size, anywhere--with or without a hub. Pricing and Availability The EtherWave Mac/PowerBook Adapter is currently shipping at an estimated U.S. street price of $289--pricing identical to that of the previous version. The adapter is covered by a lifetime warranty and can be purchased through Farallon resellers worldwide.
